Eugene Cernan: 1934 – 2017

Astronaut Eugene ‘Gene” Cernan, the last man to walk on the Moon, has died.

He was also one of the astronauts who seemed to have the most fun while visiting our neighbor:

Cernan went to space three times, as pilot of a Gemini mission, as pilot of Apollo 10 (which orbited the moon) and as Commander of Apollo 17, the last manned moon mission.

After graduating from Purdue University (electrical engineering) he accepted a Navy ROTC commission in 1958.  He joined NASA as a selectee of the third group of astronauts.

One of only three people to visit the Moon twice, Gene remained a staunch advocate of manned space exploration and was the featured subject of the documentary The Last Man on the Moon.
