DVD Review: Guardians of the Galaxy

4000050-guardians-of-the-galaxy-movie-poster-wallpaper-1920x1200I LOVED Guardians of the Galaxy when I saw it at the cinema, I not only got to see a 17 minute sneak peak of the film at the IMAX, but I also got to see a preview of the entire film before general release – bar the final short clip at the end – so annoying, but can’t really complain for all of the other perks I got.

Guardians was the first of the Marvel films that I wasn’t too familiar with the comics or characters before I saw the film. I think the trailer helped as it didn’t give much away, I remember thinking, “what the hell is the film about” but at the same time “I totally want to see this”. I also wondered, and soon realised when I saw it that it is being woven into the Avengers films, as with the Marvel Universe, many of the heroes worlds/comics cross over – we are already seeing that with Avengers but how cool for that to spread to all the Marvel films? Alas we know due to the rights being owned by other studios we probably will never see Spier-Man or the X-Men pop up in the Avengers future movies – although there is a Quicksilver in both X-Men: Days of Future Past and Avengers: Age of Ultron.

So how does this compare to what we’ve already seen from Marvel? Where I thought Avengers was funny, this made Avengers  look serious. It is full of humour, it is completely an action comedy but still has that Marvel comic feel as per the other films. I think it links in perfectly but equally stands alone so well. Chris Pratt is just brilliant as Star Lord. And the opening scene (where we first see Chris, not young Star Lord) is brilliant. Th soundtrack,  Awesome Mix Volume 1 is totally awesome. I still listen to it daily and watching the film again this week with my friend had even got her singing the songs.

There are other pretty cool characters in this film. Who would have thought that “I am Groot” would not get boring?! Did you know that they are launching a dancing baby Groot following fan demand (I joined in on that Twitter beg)? I am buying myself one for Christmas.

Rocket is also fab, and Bradley Cooper’s voice is barely recognisable as Rocket – although my theory in this is that Chris Pratt sounds very similar to Bradley so I think they had to lower Bradley’s voice a bit – I’m probably wrong, but everyone’s allowed a theory right?

And for the end short clip? Howard the Duck. Awesome!

Guardians of the Galaxy is out on DVD and Blu-Ray now.
