Asni’s Art Blog: Apocalyptic Space Art

Space art may have started out as a visualization tool for astronomers and physicists, but the artists have turned the scientific concepts into a play with colours and form, which owes more to the abstract painters of the 20th century.

The other week when I was browsing for art about taxes, I stumbled across something entirely else: a whole ream of space art images with a distinctly apocalyptic, Endzeit sort of feel. (I’m not going to speculate on what the connection might be!!)

I followed the trail of links to “similar images” DeviantArt provided for me, and soon found myself deep in outer space, and traveling fast toward the end of the universe. An uncanny and yet fascinating place to be!

I always thought there was something slightly menacing about huge celestial bodies looming on the horizon line of another even huger celestial body. And there is definitely a hint of Ragnarök in those images of suns in the process of burning up or exploding – not to mention the space detritus of asteroid belts, the mortal remains of some long dead planet or sun.

Space art may have started out as a visualization tool for the scientific findings of astronomers and physicists, but the artists have taken those concepts and turned them into something entirely more personal, and emotional: a play with colours and form, which owes more to the abstract painters of the 20th century, than it does to scientific knowledge!

Who doesn’t love a good cartoon? Anyone?  Anyone?  Bueller?  Bueller? From Disney’s inception of Steamboat Willie (still under copyright, lol) to Max Fleischer, thru Betty Boop, to the zaniness and (inappropriate?) violence of Chuck Jones and even up to today’s prime time offerings such as The Simpsons and Futurama, cartoons frequently allow us to say […]
