The first ever Lifeboat to the Stars Award presented for the best work of science fiction published in 2011 or 2012 that contributes to an understanding of the benefits, means, or difficulties of interstellar travel went to Kevin J. Anderson and Steven Savile for the novella “Tau Ceti”.

The Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for best short science fiction of the year.
First Place: “The Grinnel Method” by Molly Gloss (Strange Horizons 09/3/12 & 09/10/12)
Second Place: “Nahiiku West” by Linda Nagata  (Analog 10/12)
Third Place: Eater of Bone by Robert Reed (PS Publishing)

John W. Campbell Memorial Award for the best science fiction novel of the year.
First Place: Jack Glass: The Story of a Murderer by Adam Roberts (Gollancz)
Third Place: (tie) Alif the Unseen by G. Willow Wilson (Grove Press)
Third Place: (tie) Any Day Now by Terry Bisson (Overlook)

Frederik Pohl was presented a special Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award for his dedicated work and long service on the Sturgeon Award committee.
